Salman Rushdie stabbed on stage in New York, on Ventilator support

Booker Prize winning author Salman Rushdie has been stabbed on stage in New York state on Friday while speaking at an event at the Chautauqua Institution. The 75-year-old author is on ventilator and could lose an eye.
It is reported that the New York State Police said a man ran up onto the stage and attacked Mr Rushdie, who is now undergoing surgery at a local trauma centre. Police detained a suspect named as Hadi Matar, 24, from Fairview, New Jersey.
Rushdie was repeatedly stabbed by Hadi Matar who rushed to the stage and attacked him. Henry Reese, the interviewer, also suffered a head injury in the attack.
The attack occurred as Rushdie was about to give a speech at the Chautauqua Institution near the New York city, which holds arts programs. There were around 2,500 people in the audience, who were evacuated later.
Salman Rushdie was propelled into the spotlight with his second novel "Midnight's Children" in 1981, which won international praise and prestigious Booker Prize.
