Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which hits six months this week, has already killed some 9,000 Ukrainian soldiers, a general said.

Aljazeera reported that General Valeriy Zaluzhny, Ukraine’s commander-in-chief, said on Monday many Ukrainian children needed to be cared for “because their fathers have gone to the front and are maybe among the nearly 9,000 heroes who have been killed.

The United Nations says 5,587 civilians have been killed and 7,890 wounded during the Russian invasion of Ukraine, although the estimate is likely hugely conservative.

Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, in an address to the Crimea Platform summit, has promised to do all he can to win back the Crimean peninsula, annexed by Russia eight years ago, and urged international allies to support the effort.

In the meantime, as Ukraine prepares to celebrate Independence Day on Wednesday and also mark six months since the Russian invasion began on February 24, President Volodymyr Zelenksy has warned citizens against massive shelling and possible provocations by Moscow.

In a video address to the nation on Tuesday evening, the President said: "Tomorrow (Wednesday) is an important day for all of us. And that is why this day, unfortunately, is also important for our adversary. We must be aware that tomorrow Russian provocations and brutal strikes are possible.
