As many as 90 people have died in gang battles in Haiti's capital, the latest eruption of bloodshed in a wave of increasing violence sweeping the country.

It is reported that the violence began just a day after the first anniversary of the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse. Since Moïse was killed, violence has soared in Haiti as gangs battle over territory, and the government has struggled to crack down.

The National Human Rights Defense Network said in a statement that at least 89 people were killed and 16 others are missing in the past week’s violence.  It also said, another 74 people sustained gunshot or knife wounds. Local media reports that poverty and widespread violence is causing many Haitians to flee to the Dominican Republic or to the United States.

Doctors Without Borders (Medecins Sans Frontieres, or MSF) has said that thousands of people are trapped without access to food, drinking water and medical care in an isolated part of the Haitian capital, as clashes between rival gangs in Port-au-Prince’s Cite-Soleil neighbourhood escalate.

During the past year, Haiti has suffered from fuel shortages, including some that were exacerbated by gang blockades on fuel terminals in Port-au-Prince and surrounding areas.
