Beijing posted a record number of new Covid cases on Tuesday, with the city hunkering down under a tightening chokehold of restrictions that have sent schools online, closed many restaurants and forced employees to work from home.

More than 28,000 new infections were reported nationwide -- nearing the record high since the pandemic began -- with Guangdong province and the city of Chongqing logging over 16,000 and 6,300 cases respectively, health authorities said.

Chinese authorities on Tuesday imposed another lockdown on its largest district as the deadly Coronavirus cases began rising again. Public transport was shut down and residents were required to produce a negative test in order to leave their homes.

The outbreak is an attempt to test China's approach to its zero-Covid policies that the country is using to fight the multiple outbreaks driven by the fast-spreading omicron variants.

Baiyun district, home to 3.7 million people in Guangzhou, also suspended in-person classes for schools and sealed off universities. The measures are meant to last until Friday, the city announced.
