Atleast eight people were killed and several others injured after a massive fire, which broke out at an electric scooter showroom, spread to a hotel on the upper floors of the multi-storeyed building in Secunderabad late Monday night.

Hyderabad City Police Commissioner C. V. Anand, who along with senior police officers was camping at the accident site, said till last reports came in, eight persons, including a woman, had died and the injured were rushed to Gandhi Hospital and other nearby private hospitals. Most of the victims died of suffocation as thick plumes of smoke caught the guests in Hotel Ruby unawares. Panic stricken inmates tried to escape but were trapped in the rooms.

Officials suspect a short circuit led to the fire. The vehicles in the parking area, showroom and basement caught fire resulting in thick smoke. The hotel staff and guests noticed the fire and smoke emanating and alerted the fire department.
