Over 70 years after they went extinct in India, Prime Minister Narendra Modi Saturday released the cheetahs brought in from Namibia to quarantine enclosures in Madhya Pradesh’s Kuno National Park. Eight cheetahs had landed in Gwalior from Namibia’s capital Windhoek at around 8 am on September 17, which was also PM Modi’s 72nd birthday.

The animals are reintroduced on Saturday (September 17) after more than seven decades when they became extinct in India. The day marks the birthday of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who will turn 72 this year.

The picture tweeted by the high commission shows the front part of the Indian aircraft painted in the form of a cheetah's face.

Taking to Twitter, the Indian High Commission said “a special bird touches down in the Land of the Brave to carry goodwill ambassadors to the Land of the Tiger”.

Madhya Pradesh's Kuno-Palpur National Park (KPNP) is set to welcome eight cheetahs tomorrow under an agreement signed earlier this year between India and Namibia. The group of eight cheetahs, comprising five females and three males, will be kept in the main cabin of the aircraft with vets having full access to the big cats during the entire transit. They will not be given any food during the inter-continental flight so that the animals feel less nauseous during the long journey.

The large carnivore got completely wiped out from India due to their use for coursing, sport hunting, over-hunting and habitat loss. The government declared the cheetah extinct in the country in 1952.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be present at the Kuno-Palpur National Park in Bhopal, to welcome the eight Cheetahs.
