Karnataka Lingayat Mutt Chief Arrested For Sexually Assaulting Minors

Shivamurthy Sharanaru, a religious leader of Karnataka's politically powerful Lingayat community, was arrested yesterday after massive pressure from the civil society. Two minor girls have accused him of rape and a case was filed 6 days ago.

He has been named in a case under Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and under the law protecting Scheduled Castes and Tribes, as one of the survivors belongs to the Dalit community.

The district hospital in Chitradurga witnessed a tense atmosphere when a group of devotees gathered in front of the hospital where Shivamurthy Murugha Sharan, who was arrested on charges of sexual assault, was admitted for treatment. They were shouting slogans in his support.

the seer was taken to a government hospital in Chitradurga for a medical check-up and then driven to an undisclosed location for questioning. Shivamurthy Murugha Sharanaru, however, claimed that he was framed in the case.

Apart from the seer, a total of five people, including the warden of the monastery's hostel, are accused in the case, which was registered in Mysusu after a complaint by two minor girls.

According to the complaint, two girls, aged 15 and 16, studying at the school run by the mutt, were sexually abused for over three-and-a-half years by the seer.
