R P Kalita, the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Eastern Command, said, on Tuesday, that more and more areas under AFSPA in North East Regions will be denotified following the dropping of violence parameters to an acceptable level in these regions.
The officer also said that there has been a considerable drop in violence in the last nine months in the insurgency-affected areas of the northeast leading to the denotification of the Armed Forces (Special Power) Act (AFSPA) from some areas. And peace and development have been ushering in these regions.
The officer is responsible for the Army operations in Eastern India, including the Northeastern states where insurgency still rages in certain areas. AFSPA is still imposed in some areas, which allows security forces to legally arrest or shoot on being suspicious.
To a question on whether there are plans to withdraw AFSPA from pockets in the Northeast where it is still in operation, he said that the situation remains dynamic.
