Locals in Yairipok Khoirom Mathak staged a sit-in protest at Khoirom Mathak Handpump Makhong Community Hall demanding the permanent shift-away of the Minor Industrial Estate (MIE) from their locality.

The locals also opposed/turned down the result of the “Ambient Air quality and Ambient Noise Monitoring” tests the Manipur Pollution Control Board conducted following a complaint over the industrial estate. They also said that MIE didn’t ask for their approval at the time of establishment and since it was established without the consent of the people, the estate must move away.

Lourembam Mani, JAC’s Spokesperson, and Yumkhaibam Sangita, another local woman, said that the locals would never accept the manipulated test report. The DFO conducted the test in line with the owners under tight security and the locals would never consider the test accurate and genuine. Because on that day, only two factories functioned, a plywood factory and a sawmill, the two added.

Besides the harsh sounds of the sawmills, dropping woods and beams, JCB operations, TATA Tippers, and stone-crushing machines were not covered up during the test.

The license/permit for the establishment of the industrial estate can’t be considered for full operation. It was constructed without the consent of the locals, the sarpanch, and everyone, the JAC said and demanded shifting away of the industrial estate from the residential area.
