Two Manipuri Artisans Recieve the Prestigious Shilp Guru Award and National Award

Two artisans, Gurumayum Shanti Devi and Maisnam Lalini Devi of Manipur were conferred with the prestigious Shilp Guru Award and National Award on November 28 by Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar at the Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi. They were the only North East Indians conferred with the prestigious Shilp Guru Award 2018 and National Award 2019.

The Ministry of Textiles organized the award function to honor master craftspersons with significant contributions to the handicraft sector. The ministry presented 30 Shilp Guru Awards and 78 National Awards for the years 2017, 2018, and 2019 to master craftspersons.

Gurumayum Shanti Devi received the prestigious Shilp Award for the year 2018 in the Artistic Textiles category. Her works comprise Lamthang Khullak, Khamen Chatpi, and Luhong Phijin. She was among the ten selected for Shilp Guru Award 2018. A total of 30 Shilp Gurus were selected for the years 2017, 2018, and 2019.

The Award consists of a gold coin, Rs.2.00 lakhs prize money, a Tamrapatra, a shawl, and a certificate.

It can also be noted that Gurumayum Shanti Devi was conferred the National Award in 2016 for her work in such artistic textiles.

While Maisnam Lalini Devi received the prestigious National Award - 2019 for her "Saphee Lanphee" under the endangered category.

The award consisted of a cash prize, Tamra Patra, a certificate, and a shawl.

The State Government had previously honored Maisnam Lalini Devi with the State Award 2008-09. Reportedly, they were the only individuals selected for these awards from the entire North East.

The two awardees expressed great joy upon being honored with these awards and thanked the Development Commissioner (Handicrafts), Ministry of Textiles.

The Award consists of Rs.1.00 lakh prize money, a Tamrapatra, a Shawl, and a certificate. 78 craftspersons have been selected for the National Awards for the years 2017, 2018, and 2019 including 02 design innovation awards where a designer and artisan collaborate to create a unique product.
