Imphal, 16th April 2022: Three Students - two girls and a boy sustained Injuries when a team of policemen shoved them from the First Floor.

The incident occurred at the VC Office in the Arts Department- Dhanamanjuri University when 300 plus PG students stormed in at DMU’s Vice Chancellor’s Office today. The students gathered peacefully at first to submit their charter of demands for the blended mode of examination or home assignment mode while discarding the offline examination. While keeping in view the teachers’ inability to complete the prescribed syllabus, shortage of time to commence the 4th semester, and certain other loopholes on the side of the administrative and examination departments, the students said they have no options left but to boycott the entire University.

The students submitted a charter of demands today to the Vice-Chancellor. The memorandum demanded the conduct of PG 3rd Semester Examination in assignment or blended mode, Completion of the same exam before the end of April and Commencement of `4th Semester Classes, and withdrawal of the agitation movements on consideration of the two demands above.

The VC called for a meeting with the Examination Committee and the HODs to work out an alternative means to the offline examination, scheduled for 20th April 2022. When the VC and Co refused to concede to their demands, hundreds of students stormed in to protest as they didn’t receive any positive response from the VC or the registrar.

Meanwhile, the police personnel deployed there sneaked among the students gathered on the threshold of the VC’s building and used violence to evacuate the students. A team of policemen dragged a boy brutally by the neck. He was also reportedly hit and had severe pain in the left abdomen. The boy almost choked out as a friend reported. While another team of police shoved a group of girl students from the first floor, the girls tumbled down the steps. A girl broke her nose in the brutality of the policemen, while the other girl had bruises and swelling on her left leg.

However, the Additional SP- Admin, Lakshmi Thingbaijam MPS sent a team and took the injured girl to Raj Medicity for treatment. While the students took the wounded boy to the same hospital by ambulance they hired a little later.

The students said that they were already late by a semester. The 3rd-semester exam was supposed to complete by December 2021. Their colleagues from Manipur University and other universities outside the state had completed their exams through assignment mode long ago, and 4th-semester classes are commencing. However, the registrar and the examination committee are hell bound to conduct the physical examination for the DMU, added the students.

They furthered that all these unlikely incidents happened for no other reason but because of the erratic functioning of the administrative department. The officials don’t issue mark sheets, admit cards or the registration certificates in time. All the agitating students belong to PG 3rd Semester, but not a single student possesses a registration certificate since the officials have not issued them till today.

It is not that the students are afraid to sit the offline examination. However, many universities in India including Manipur University conducted their examination through the assignment mode, why are the examination committee of DMU hell bound to conduct the Offline mode when they knew that there had not been enough physical classes commenced this session owing to various reasons ranging from the covid pandemic to the teacher’s strike for 7th Pay commission. There were interruptions in conducting online classes either due to network problems or inefficacy in technological applications. Ironically, when the students went to colleges to attend physical classes after an official notice following covid infections lowered in the state. We missed that too since the teachers and the authority had some issues, and our class got cancelled.

However, when our correspondent sneaked in for the other side of the story from the VC himself, the assistant and other staff stopped our correspondent at the entrance while they refused to comment on the matter.
