Street Vendor Owners Burst against IMC’s Ban on Side Vendors; Demand Withdrawal of the Order in 5 days
Imphal, 20th April 2022: Hundreds of street vendor owners stormed Imphal Municipal Council after police personnel confronted and wounded some of them in their attempt to sell things against the government’s order to ban street vending in Khwairamband Market today.
The side vendor owners shouted various slogans against the Chairperson to revoke the order in 5 days.
The unlikely incident occurred when the police personnel deployed to check the operation of street vendors in and around Khwairamband market challenged a group of Street Vendor women who attempted to begin vending their stuff against the order of the IMC to ban their operation.
Dissatisfied with the new policy to ban side vendors in and around Khwairamband Keithel, hundreds of women street vendors organized a protest rally today. The team also expressed strong dissatisfaction over the action of the BJP-led Government, IMC officials, and police personnel.
While interacting with the media, the Publicity Secretary of the Street Vendors Association said that under the Street Vendors (Protection of Livelihood and Regulation of Street Vending) Act, 2014, the street vendors should operate in public areas and protect their rights. She found it surprising why the state government is adamant to shift the vending zone to Sanakeithel Supermarket, a secluded and deserted place in comparison to Khwairamband and its surrounding where business booms each day. The street vendors are confused about the plans and policies of the government. They doubt if the government is inclined to wipe out the street vendors under the pretext of converting Imphal into a smart city.
Another member of the association said that street vendors are everywhere. With this small side-vending, they look after their family with the income. If this is banned, they can no longer support their family. They will happily choose death over such a worthless life.
