US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan has drawn bipartisan support at home and backing among the worlds democracies. Meanwhile, China, which claims Taiwan as its own territory with no right to an independent identity, has rallied support among fellow authoritarian states.

The trip by US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who is second in line to the presidency and the highest-profile elected US official to visit Taiwan in 25 years, has ignited a diplomatic firestorm.

The US House Speaker on Wednesday said her delegation's visit to Taiwan was a show of support for the island, after the trip sparked a furious response from China. Meanwhile, Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen said the island would "not back down".

Pelosi during an event with President Tsai Ing-wen said "Today, our delegation... came to Taiwan to make unequivocally clear we will not abandon our commitment to Taiwan and we are proud of our enduring friendship".

Meanwhile, China also announced live-fire military drills encircling Taiwan, in a move Taipei's Defence Ministry said threatened the island's key ports and urban areas. According to coordinates shared by the People's Liberation Army said “at some points, the zone of Chinese operations will come within 20 km of Taiwan's shoreline”.
