Long-time opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim was sworn in as Malaysia's prime minister on Thursday in a victory for political reformers who were locked in a battle with Malay nationalists for days after a divisive general election produced a hung Parliament.

Malaysia's king, Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah, named Anwar Ibrahim, 75, as the nation's tenth leader after expressing satisfaction that he is the candidate who is likely to have majority support.

The newly elected Prime Minister said “my focus is the economy. We will continue to uphold Islam as official religion of Malaysia. Our ties with China are pivotal. We will also work with the US and other countries”.

He vowed to fight corruption and focus on the economy.

His appointment ends five days of unprecedented post-election crisis, but could usher in a new instability with his rival, former prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin, challenging him to prove his majority in Parliament.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Anwar Ibrahim on his election as Malaysia’s Premier and said he looks forward to working closely with him to further strengthen India-Malaysia enhanced strategic partnership.

The 75-year-old Anwar had time and again been denied the premiership despite getting within striking distance over the years: he was deputy prime minister in the 1990s and the official prime minister-in-waiting in 2018.
