Stage set for 53rd edition of IFFI in Goa beginning tomorrow

The 53rd edition of IFFI, the International Film Festival of India is all set to open to a colourful opening ceremony at Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Indoor Stadium, Taleigão in Goa from Sunday.

During the 8-day festival, more than 770 films are expected to be screened, including 183 in the ‘International’ section and more than 550 in the much acclaimed ‘Indian Panorama’ — including 339 feature length film in 23 different languages and dialects and 248 non-feature films in 24 different languages and dialects.

More than 5,000 delegates have registered so far while the final number is expected to touch 7,000 as the festival nears, said an official, asking not to be named.

This year IFFI will screen a package of 10 films from Manipur to celebrate the 50th years of Manipuri cinema. In a statement, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Government of India said it will honour the vision of Manipuri film fraternity on successfully concluding the 50 glorious years of Manipuri Cinema to further the IFFI's aim of promoting the film art of cinematic, thematic and aesthetic excellence.

There will be five feature and five non-feature Manipuri films that will screen in the IFFI 2022. First full-length Manipuri feature film ‘Mamtamgi Manipur’ directed by Deb Kumar Bose, ‘Brojendro gee Luhongba’ directed by SN Chand Sajati, ‘Ishanou’ directed by Aribam Syam Sharma, ‘Phijigi Mani’ directed by Oinam Gautam and ‘Loktak Leirembi’ directed by Haobam Paban Kumar will be screen in the feature film category.

The five non-feature film that will showcase are ‘The Man of the Theatre’ directed by Oken Amakcham and Nirmala Chanu, ‘Ilisa Amagi Mahao’ directed by Ningthouja Lancha, ‘Silent Poet’directed by Borun Thokchom, ‘Look at the Sky’ directed by Ashok Veilou and ‘The Tainted Mirror’ directed by Romi Meitei.

IFFI, founded in 1952, is among Asia’s most prominent film festivals. The festival is conducted every year by the Union ministry of information and broadcasting in collaboration with the Entertainment Society of Goa.
