During his poll rally in Nagaland, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said PM Narendra Modi’s initiative to take the Naga peace talks to fruition should pave the way for the total exit of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act from Nagaland within the next three to four years.

“I want to remind you all of Nagaland before 2014. Bloodshed, gunfight, gunfights, blasts and insurgency traumatised the state. Prime Minister Narendra Modi started the ongoing peace process, putting Nagaland on the path to lasting peace and development with the preservation of Naga culture, language and traditions”.

In Tuensang, Shah said steps taken by the Centre in the last nine years had led to a 70 percent decline in violence and other disturbances across the northeastern states”.

In the meantime, the Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge will campaign in Nagaland. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Tuesday asserted a Congress-led alliance government will come to power at the Centre in 2024 and his party is in talks with other parties on how to win next year’s general elections. Addressing his first poll rally at Diphupar near Dimapur for the February 27 Nagaland Assembly elections, Kharge said an alliance government will “come” in 2024 and the Congress will “lead” the alliance.

Kharge’s assertion on the Opposition alliance to take on the BJP comes three days after Bihar chief minister and JDU leader Nitish Kumar said at the CPI(ML) convention in Patna that the BJP would slip below 100 seats if a broadbased unity could be forged before the 2024 general elections. He had also appealed to the Congress leadership to take a call on an Opposition alliance as

Meanwhile, Republican Party of India (Athawale) president Ramdas Athawale declared that his party will support the BJP-NDPP alliance if it returns to power in Nagaland.

Addressing media persons at the residence of party candidate Z Kasheto Yeptho for Ghaspani-II assembly constituency at Chekiye village here, Athawale said his party has fielded eight popular and capable candidates for the February 27 elections in the state. Though the RPI (A) has put up candidates for the first time in Nagaland assembly elections, the RPI (A) exuded confidence that his party candidates will emerge victorious in three to four seats in the state and added that Yeptho will be the leader of the elected members.
