The Congress Party across the nation hit the streets, hold press conferences and indicated wider Opposition action to protest against the disqualification of former party chief, Rahul Gandhi, from the Lok Sabha last week following his conviction in a criminal defamation case.
In a statement, the Congress Party said "launch of Jai Bharat Satyagraha in protest against the erroneous conviction and disqualification of Shri Rahul Gandhi, and to express the Congress Party’s resolve to keep raising the voice of the people against the blatant loot of the people’s money and nation’s wealth by Modani (Modi-Adani)”.
The protest will last until April 8, according to the statement, and during the demonstrations, all block/mandal party units will hold Nukkad Sabhas under the Jai Bharat Satyagraha banner and address the public on relevant issues.
In the National capital, the party attempted to take out a 1km-long ”Loktantra Bachao Mashal Shanti March” from Red Fort but clashed with Delhi Police who did not allow them to proceed to the venue.
Congress general secretary K C Venugopal tweeted: “Many senior leaders, along with our energetic and dedicated youth cadre were marching towards Red Fort, but the barbaric Delhi Police tried its best to stall our peaceful march. PM Modi & Shah should know, we will not step back from our fight. Bring it on!”
In Manipur, MLA Okram Sujakumar has categorically stated that the way in which INC leader Rahul Gandhi was suspended as a member Lok Sabha is a defeat for democracy itself and a major setback in Indian politics. Addressing a press briefing, O Sujakumar continued that the Congress party is with Rahul Gandhi and will fight together to save democracy. It is normal for politicians to criticise others especially during the time of elections, the MLA said, asking what the BJP is expecting from the Opposition parties.
In Meghalaya, the Congress has launched 'Jai Bharat Satyagraha'. AICC media coordinator Bobbeeta Sharma told media persons that the programme will continue till April 8. During this period, a series of street corner meetings will be organised, she said.
