On the occasion of Jan Aushadhi Diwas, Prime Minister Narendra Modi reiterated the government's dedication to providing high-quality, affordable medicines to all citizens, aiming to create a healthier and fitter India.

In a post on X, PM Modi stated, “#JanAushadhiDiwas reflects our commitment to provide top quality and affordable medicines to people, ensuring a healthy and fit India.”

Union Health Minister JP Nadda echoed the Prime Minister’s sentiments, highlighting that over 15,000 Jan Aushadhi Kendras across the country are catering to more than 10 lakh people, resulting in savings of Rs 30,000 crore for the public.

Nadda emphasized the transformative impact of the Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Jan Aushadhi Pariyojana (PMBJP) in ensuring accessibility to affordable medicines under the slogan “Achi Bhi, Sasti Bhi” (Good and Affordable). The initiative includes a diverse portfolio of 2,047 medicines and 300 surgical items, all subjected to stringent quality checks.

Unlike free medicine schemes, PMBJP maintains sustainability through competitive procurement, efficient supply chains managed by the Pharmaceuticals & Medical Devices Bureau of India (PMBI), and targeted incentives for marginalized communities, including SC/ST groups, women entrepreneurs, and businesses in remote areas.

Announcing future expansion plans, Nadda revealed that the government aims to increase the number of Jan Aushadhi Kendras to 25,000 by 2027, with 5,000 new centres expected to open this year.

The program has also gained international recognition, with the first overseas Jan Aushadhi Kendra launched in Mauritius.

“Expanding beyond India, we have set a goal of opening 25,000 Jan Aushadhi Kendras by 2027… This year, we will be opening 5,000 more. I urge everyone to visit Jan Aushadhi Kendras and spread awareness about the benefits of affordable medicines,” Nadda stated.

Observed annually on March 7, Jan Aushadhi Diwas raises awareness about the PMBJP scheme and promotes the use of generic medicines. The celebration includes a week-long series of events from March 1 to 7 across the country.

Originally launched in November 2008 under the Department of Pharmaceuticals, Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers, the PMBJP aims to provide cost-effective, high-quality medicines through dedicated Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Kendras (PMBJKs).
