The newly constituted Delhi Assembly held its first session on Monday, with Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and her six cabinet ministers being sworn in as MLAs. Newly elected MLAs Kapil Mishra (BJP) took his oath in Sanskrit, Sanjeev Jha (AAP) in Maithili, and Manjinder Singh Sirsa (BJP) in Punjabi.

BJP MLA Arvinder Singh Lovely was sworn in as the pro-tem Speaker, administering the oath on behalf of Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena at Raj Niwas. Following Gupta and her cabinet, the remaining MLAs were also sworn in as the session began with the singing of Vande Mataram, observed by Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva from the Speaker's gallery.

The election for the new Speaker is set to take place later in the day, with BJP MLA Vijender Gupta expected to assume the role. According to the Delhi Assembly bulletin, Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena will address the House on February 25, after which the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) reports will be tabled and the floor opened for the motion of thanks on the LG's address.

“Our top priority is to place the CAG report on the House table in this inaugural session. This is people's hard-earned money, misused by the previous government, and they must account for every penny,” Gupta stated.

In related developments, on Sunday the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLAs elected former Chief Minister Atishi as the Leader of Opposition—the first woman to hold the post. AAP's Delhi unit convenor Gopal Rai confirmed that the decision was reached by consensus among all AAP MLAs, with Atishi pledging to rigorously hold the BJP-led government accountable, including ensuring fulfillment of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's promise to provide ₹2,500 to women in the city by March 8.

The February 5 assembly polls saw the BJP oust AAP from power, winning 48 of the 70 seats, with top AAP leaders including Arvind Kejriwal and Sisodia losing their seats.
