Twitter has fired the majority of its over 200 employees in India as part of mass layoffs across the globe ordered by its new owner Elon Musk who is looking to make his $44 billion acquisition work. The company had nearly 250 employees in India.
Citing sources, news agency PTI reported that the layoffs are across engineering, sales and marketing, and communications teams. However, there is no clarity yet on the severance package to be paid to employees laid off in India.
Twitter employees globally received an email at around 4am IST on 4 November, informing them that they will lose access to Twitter’s internal systems, like Slack, emails etc., if their role is impacted by the downsizing.
The company had already undergone a round of downsizing in September this year.
After the completion of the $44 billion deal last week, Musk fired top Twitter executives including CEO Parag Agrawal, CFO Ned Segal along with legal and policy head Vijaya Gadde, according to a WSJ report.
Several top executives including CMO Leslie Berland also left the company after the firing of top executives.
