Centre banned Popular Front of India for five years

In a major move following nationwide raids on Popular Front of India, the Union Home Ministry issued a notification banning PFI for five years under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).
The notification said: "There had been a number of instances of international linkages of PFI with Global Terrorist Groups and some activists of the PFI have joined Islamic State of Iraq and Syria and participated in terror activities in Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan."
The move follows two rounds of massive raids on PFI leaders in terror funding cases.
The MHA has also issued another order empowering States to notify places associated with PFI and its front organisations where unlawful activity is taking place.
Taking to Twitter, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said “I welcome the ban on (Popular Front of India) PFI by the Government of India”.
“The Government is firm in its resolve to ensure that anyone with a diabolical, divisive or disruptive design against India shall be dealt with iron fist” the CM said.
State Governments of Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka and Gujarat have recommended a ban on PFI, MHA said. MHA will now set up a tribunal under UAPA to try the case where PFI could defend its case against the ban.
