Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday said the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) should join hands to fight terrorism and not hesitate to condemn countries that support terror.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), says "Terrorism is a threat to regional and global peace. We will have to fight against terrorism...Some countries use cross-border terrorism as an instrument of their policies and give shelter to terrorists. SCO should not hesitate to criticize such countries. SCO countries should condemn it. There should be no double standards on terrorism".

"We would be delighted to share India's AI-based language platform Bhashini with everyone to remove language barriers within SCO. It can become an example of digital technology and inclusive growth. SCO can become a significant voice for reforms within the UN and other global institutions. I am delighted that Iran is joining the SCO family as a new member...", the Prime Minister said.

The regional security situation formed a key part of Modi’s televised opening address at a virtual SCO Summit hosted by India, with the prime minister insisting that Afghanistan’s soil should not be used to destabilise neighboring countries or to encourage extremist ideologies.

India backs a proposal for reforming and modernising the SCO, Modi said, adding that Iran’s inclusion as the newest member of the Eurasian grouping should spur efforts to make better use of Chabahar port and the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC) to give the landlocked countries of Central Asia access to the Indian Ocean.
