In view of an unprecedented spike in Covid-19 cases in China and some other countries, the Government of India has begun preparations to tackle the coronavirus threat by taking a slew of measures including emergency mock drills in hospitals from Tuesday and approval to Covid nasal vaccine.

Union Health Ministry has asked all the States and Union Territories to hold Mock Drill at all health facilities. The objective of this exercise is to ensure operational readiness of these health facilities for management of COVID.

The focus of the Mock Drill will be on availability of health facilities, bed capacities, optimal availability of human resources including doctors, nurses, and paramedics, availability of advanced and basic life support ambulances, testing capacities, and medical oxygen. The Ministry has asked to do the Mock Drill under the overall guidance of District Collectors in close consultation with officers of Health Department of the State and Union Territories.

Among other measures, the Health Ministry sources said that Bharat Biotech's intranasal Covid vaccine has been approved by the Centre for inclusion in the vaccination programme as a booster dose for those above 18 years of age. Those who have taken Covishield and Covaxin can take the nasal vaccine as a heterologous booster dose.
