In a significant step toward fostering peace and harmony in Manipur, a crucial Meeting on Community Understanding for Peaceful and Harmonious Co-existence was held in New Delhi between representatives of Thadou Inpi Manipur, the apex body of the Thadou community in Manipur, and the Meitei Alliance, a consortium representing various Meitei organizations based outside the state.
The meeting was led by Mr. M. James Thadou, President of Thadou Inpi Manipur, and Mr. Sagolsem Biramani, leader of the Meitei Alliance, with the participation of other eminent personalities. Discussions focused on promoting mutual understanding and strengthening inter-community relations to preserve Manipur’s diverse cultural fabric.
The two groups issued a joint press statement reaffirming their commitment to a peaceful and united Manipur. They emphasized the need to preserve and promote the state as a cohesive and harmonious multi-ethnic society built on unity, integrity, peace, respect, and safety. Both parties agreed to adopt a collaborative approach in addressing the genuine concerns of Manipur’s communities while prioritizing the collective interest of the state.
A key point of discussion was the recognition of Manipur’s original inhabitants, including all indigenous communities, and the need to update the National Register of Citizens (NRC) to reflect this. The meeting also called for the delisting of ambiguous classifications, such as "Any Kuki Tribes", from the Scheduled Tribes List of Manipur.
Furthermore, the Meitei Alliance acknowledged the leadership of Thadou Inpi Manipur in preserving and promoting the Thadou identity as independent and distinct from the Kuki community. Both sides expressed their commitment to working together to prevent the misidentification and misinterpretation of community identities.
The meeting underscored the importance of continued dialogue and joint initiatives to strengthen inter-community relations and ensure long-term peace in Manipur. Delegates reaffirmed their dedication to fostering an environment of trust and cooperation, paving the way for a harmonious future in the state.
