The Zomi Students Federation (ZSF) has announced an indefinite emergency shutdown in Churachandpur starting today. According to a statement released by the organisation's Information and Publicity Wing, all normal activities in the district will be suspended until further notice.
As part of the shutdown, educational institutions, including schools and colleges, will remain closed, along with all shops and business establishments. The ZSF has also urged residents to stay indoors during this period. The reason behind the shutdown has not been disclosed in the statement.
Tensions flared between the Hmar and Zomi communities in Churachandpur, resulting in one fatality. Fresh violence erupted on Tuesday night following reports of a peace agreement between the Hmar Inpui and Zomi Council.
The clashes involved stone pelting, vandalism, and a shutdown enforced by protestors. In response to the escalating unrest, the District Magistrate issued a second public notice, urging both sides to maintain peace. Meanwhile, the district administration issued a second public appeal asking the residents of Churachandpur "to cease all violent activities" and cooperate with authorities.
