The Rajya Sabha has approved the imposition of President’s Rule in Manipur following months of violence and instability. The decision saw cross-party support, though opposition leaders voiced criticism.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah reiterated the Centre’s focus on restoring peace and announced upcoming talks between the Meitei and Kuki communities. He also dismissed political blame games, noting no party came forward to form a government after former Chief Minister N Biren Singh’s resignation.

Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi to visit the state and directly engage with the crisis.

Amit Shah reiterated how the violence was started by a high court order that has been set aside by the Supreme Court. “In the seven years before May 2023 there were no strikes, blockades or curfews in Manipur. There was unrest among the tribal population only after the HC order. There was a feeling of insecurity that spread after the HC order. The situation was volatile. The SC has already set aside the order.”

President’s Rule was imposed on February 13 in Manipur after then chief minister N Biren Singh resigned on February 9, following nearly two years of ethnic violence that killed at least 260 people and displaced another 50,000. It was imposed four days after chief minister Biren Singh’s resignation.
