18th May 2022: CM N. Biren Singh sent his gratitude to the general public as he claims the tremendous success of the government’s War on Drugs. The war on drugs began on 20th April 2022. However, the Anti-Drug Taskforce has recovered Rupees 182,29,43,000 from international drug dealings and destroyed 380 acres of poppy cultivation as per CM.
The most remarkable achievements of the War on Drugs declared by CM in a press conference held at CM's Secretariat are,
i) That Paomei, the 2nd largest Community of the Naga, their apex body, and other CSOs assured that the whole community would not indulge in poppy cultivation and its allied activities in their territory.
ii) While on May 9, the most populated community of the Naga, their apex body, women’s body, students’ body, and other CSOs assured that they would support War on Drugs and prohibit poppy plantation and drug dealings in Tangkhul inhabited regions. They also began organizing awareness programs in joint hands with the government machinery in Kamjong and Ukhrul as a follow-up.
iii) Besides, the Zeliangrong community in Noney and Tamenglong also declared on 12th May that they would stop poppy plantation and drug-related activities in their territory as part of their support for the war on drugs. The apex body of the community, students’ union, women’s group, and other CSOs of the region took part in the declaration.
iv) While on 14th May, 50 village chiefs and the MLA herself from the Kuki-dominated Saikhul Assembly constituency came and declared that they would prohibit poppy plantations and other drug cartels in the region as part of their support for the Government’s War on Drugs.
v) And most encouragingly on the same day, the village chiefs with the MLAs from Tengnoupal and 41 AC Chandel pledged to ban poppy plantation and drug dealings.
vi) Most recently, clubs in Moreh and KSO also declared through a press conference that they would ban all sorts of drug peddling and poppy plantations in the region.
vii) While in the valley also, incidences of burning down and destroying wine, heroin powder, etc. by anti-drug groups and unions are a sign of major development and support for the Government’s War on Drugs.
The CM expressed his gratitude to the people of Manipur for their support of the cause. He furthered that government only can never achieve such success without the support of the people.
The CM also recalled the incident in which Pe Village in Ukhrul shared a video in which the villagers cut down the poppy vegetation themselves in support of the CM’s War on Drugs during the previous term. The CM himself rewarded them with Rupees 10 lakhs to support them and indulge them in other schemes and developments. The CM added that a national daily reported the village to have produced potatoes on a large scale.
The CM continued that such developments are quite encouraging, and he believes that the eradication of poppy cultivation will be successful. He also urged people to be a part of the war on drugs.
In response to netizens’ questions on whether the government arrested drug Kingpins or not, CM N. Biren said that those drug peddlers who have been sentenced to 7, 8, 13 to 14 years of rigorous imprisonment are kingpins. They are thus sentenced on fact filing and evidence proofing. Recently also, a combined team of CDO Moreh Ward No. 3 and Assam Rifles arrested one international drug trafficker, Bonkhai- a 19 years old boy from Burma. The team caught 2.19 Kg of heroin powder and 51.95 Kg of heroin. He is currently in the prison. While in another incident, rupees 108 crores worth of heroin and WY tablets were caught by 6 peddlers in Tenjang Village. The CM also named many Kingpins under arrest and asked the media to collect the names of the kingpins from the SP Narcotics and Affairs of Border(NAB) for general information.
Regarding why recovered items of drugs have not been disposed of or burnt down, the CM said the narcotic drugs caught can’t be burnt down so easily. Until and unless the court procedures are not completed, they can’t be either spoiled or burnt. The CM read out a few items of drugs ready to be burnt down in front of the public and media as soon as the court procedures are completed.
