Chief Minister N Biren Singh kicked off the first Chief Minister’s Sagol Kangjei Championship at Kangla in Imphal on Friday.

The championship is being organised by the All-Manipur Polo Association as part of the Sangai Festival 2022, the state’s biggest tourism festival, under the slogan “Save Manipuri Pony, Save Grazing Field and Revive Sagol Kangjei”.

The Chief Minister said “It’s a historic day for Manipur! Continuing our mission to save and promote the indigenous game of Sagol Kangjei, inaugurated the 1st Chief Minister’s Sagol Kangjei Championship at Manung Kangjeibung, Kangla in the presence of Hon’ble Ministers, MLAs, Scholars and various other esteemed dignitaries”.

“I appreciate everyone involved in organising the 1st Chief Minister’s Sagol Kangjei Championship to preserve the aged-old Pana Kangjei, an integral part of Manipur's Civilisation”, he said.

Further, he said Manipuri ponies have always been a part of the state’s civilisation and culture.  Sagol kangjei could give a message to the world about “who we are and the steps of civilisation the state had come through since time immemorial”. The championship would promote the importance of preserving the game and the endangered breed of the Manipuri pony, he added.

The chief minister also launched the Sagol Tongba Police (Manipur Mounted Police) which will be used to maintain law and order in the Imphal City and will also be a tourist attraction during the Sangai Festival 2022.
