Editor of Sanaleibak Daily Ningombam Hemanta Kumar was arrested by a team of Irilbung police station, Imphal East on Wednesday morning. Later, he was reportedly released after a joint deliberation.
In a joint statement released by the All Manipur Working Journalists’ Union (AMWJU) and Editors’ Guild Manipur (EJM), the move of the state police forces was strongly condemned the manner of the picking up from his residence.
The statement said ‘Ningombam Hemanta Kumar is a respectable editor and not an absconder and the manner how he was picked up for his statement in a panel discussion in local TV Chennel affects his dignity and stature in the society’.
Further, AMMJU and EJM officials also resolved to place the state government to ensure that such unsavoury incidents do not recure in future.
‘If such unavoidable incidents happen again, the journalist fraternity will not take it lying down and all efforts to safeguard the journalists of the state will be taken up, including legal actions’, the statement read.
Ningombam Hemanta kumar is one of the winners of the Manipur State Journalist Award 2022; named the Best Editor Award on National Integration & Communal Harmony by the directorate of Information and Public Relations.
