Hemanta Biswa Sarma broke silence on his alleged link with Kuki militant group on Tuesday saying that the allegation is baseless and devoid of merit.

An official statement from CM Hemanta said that there is no engagement or understanding with some UG leaders of Manipur.

The statement furthered that 25 armed groups of Kuki/Zomi/Hmar ethnic communities under SoO in Manipur, signed the SoO agreement in 2008 during the then Congress government. And the appeal mentioned in the social media post is written by the Self Styled Chairman of one of these groups who was under investigation for his involvement in the arms pilferage case to NIA for investigation, indicating its seriousness in such case. The Involved persons were charge-sheeted by the NIA, which negates any Suspicion of any compromise as alleged in the appeal.

The said appeal is a desperate attempt by an individual to save himself. Any insinuation of understanding with the said individual is baseless and devoid of merit.

Earlier, on Wednesday, the 7th of June, Assam Congress Chief Bhupen Borah on Wednesday demanded that Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma be arrested under the National Security Act (NSA) for allegedly taking the help of leaders of a Kuki militant group for Manipur elections.

The party also held a hunger strike in Guwahati to protest against Himanta Biswa Sarma for his alleged "unconstitutional relationship with the Kuki militants".

A 2019 letter by the leader of one of the Kuki outfits under SoO to union home minister Amit Shah, claimed that two BJP leaders — Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma and Ram Madhav – had taken help of Kuki militant organisations to win the 2017 assembly elections in Manipur.

It may be mentioned here that the BJP stormed to power in Manipur for the first time in 2017.

The letter was one of the annexures attached along with an affidavit filed by SS Haokip, chairman of the United Kuki Liberation Front (UKLF), in an NIA court on June 8, 2023.

UKLF is one of the armed Kuki organisations under suspension of operations (SoO).

In the letter, the UKLF leader alleged that, in 2017, his organization and another Kuki outfit United People Front (UPF) got BJP candidates elected, as per an ‘agreement’ with Ram Madhav and Himanta Biswa Sarma.
