The International Day of Older Persons 2022 is being observed across the globe on October 1, Saturday. In Manipur, the department of Social Welfare has also observed the day at the Th. Iboyaima Shumang Leela Shanglen, Palace compound.
Chief Minister N. Biren Singh, State Social Welfare Minister H. Dingo Singh, Health Minister Sapam Ranjan were among several dignitaries attended the event.
At the function, the Chief Minister said “he didn’t encourage the new culture of abandoning old parents by their sons/daughters and keeping them at the old age home”.
The theme of this year is “The resilience and contributions of older women”.
The day was introduced by the United Nations General Assembly with an aim of honouring the contribution of older persons and looking into the problems that they face. Older people make significant contributions to society via volunteer work, passing on experience and knowledge, and assisting their families with different responsibilities.
On 14 December 1990, the United Nations General Assembly designated October 1 as the International Day of Older Persons. This was preceded by initiatives such as the Vienna International Plan of Action on Ageing, which was adopted by the 1982 World Assembly on Ageing and endorsed later that year by the UN General Assembly.
