At least Thirteen people have been killed in the latest clashes between members of rival ethnic groups in the state of Manipur on Wednesday.

The incessant gunshot was reported at Khamenlok last evening, and reportedly the cross-firing continues. More than ten were reportedly injured and three remain missing.

A ground report stated that thirteen Meitei civilians were killed by suspected Kuki militants in the Khamenlok area, Imphal East district on Wednesday.

Their bodies were deposited at the JNIMS mortuary. They were identified as - Haobijam Somenkumar from Pangei Waiton Leikai, Moirangthem Heman from Okshu, Konjengbam Shankar from Itum Nungoi Awang Leikai, Telem Thoithoi from Leimakol Mapal, Laishram Naothoibi from Kongpal Ningthoubung Leikai, RK Prasanta from Kongpal Ningthoubung Leikai, Yumnam Surjitkumar from Ningthemcha, Laishram Suresh from Ningthemcha.

The injured have been admitted to Raj Medicity Hospital, Imphal.

On the other side, security forces shoved on with a hunt for illegal weapons and the government of India has constituted a peace committee in Manipur under the chairpersonship of the Manipur governor Anusuiya Uikey.

Violence between members of the Kuki ethnic group, who mostly live in the hills, and Meiteis, the dominant community in the lowlands, erupted on May 3, flashed by resentment over economic benefits and quotas in government jobs and education reserved for hill people.

Central security force reinforcements have been sent to the state and they have been searching for illegal weapons.

Meanwhile, civil society organizations and political groups from the Meitei and Kuki communities have refused to join a peace committee set up by the federal government in the brokering peace.

Manipur shares a nearly 400 km (250-mile) border with Myanmar and a coup there in 2021 pushed thousands of refugees into the Indian state.
