Six organizations suspect conspiracy by judiciary in favour of drugs cartels
The press released by six students organization, namely AMSU, MSF, DESAM, SUK, AIMMS, and KSA cited various incidents where drug smugglers were being apprehended and released again on bail in most cases, the organizations said the prevailing laws and systems against drug-related issues had proved Manipur a safe haven for drug dealers and smugglers. At this, the group of organizations urges the people in judiciary and investigating agencies to be more stringent in tackling drug cartels. The six students' body suspects that a few handfuls of lawyers are backing the drug mafia in court proceedings- where they got easily freed in the process of trials. They urge to never back and give support in favour of the individuals since they are the unpretentious enemies of our society spoiling the lives of an uncountable number of individuals, youths, married ones, parents, and others- leading to Manipur in grave peril of drug abuse reports.
According to the Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment, Govt of India "Magnitude of Substance Abuse 2019', Manipur reported 34344 alarming drug abuse. In Manipur, the scourge of drug abuse was realized around 1989-90, when a few cases of Human Immunodeficiency Virus(HIV) infection were detected among injecting(intravenous) drug(IDU) users. Quickly, Manipur was at the top of HIV infection among states in the country with almost 23 percent of the total HIV infections. As much as 90 percent of HIV infections in Manipur was accounted for by sharing of syringe among IDUs, whereas in other states about 75 percent of infection was due to sexual transmission.
With the cases of drug smuggling and manufacturing increasing in the state despite the war on drugs by the government and its agencies, six major student organizations solemnly declare that it is time we all should work as a single unit and extend help to the efforts of the government in countering the menace of narcotic drugs in the state. They also urge the concerned authorities and other law-implementing bodies to punish drug smugglers/dealers and poppy planters regardless of what they are and what backgrounds they have.
Speaking further on the continuation of poppy plantations mainly in hill areas despite a ban from the side of the government and the provision of various alternatives to earn a livelihood, the organizations said that the state needs stronger acts to punish the convicts or else it won’t be able to curb the menace of poppy plantation, manufacturing, and smuggling of the same. The introduction of amendments in the NDPS act for harder punishment of drug-related criminals would greatly help curb the menace of various issues of drug cartels in the state.
According to investigating agencies, poppy cultivation is rampant in Manipur as the same fetches more money than other crops and the farmers are also supported by the drug mafia and the cross-border network of illegal drug traders.
The organizations also propose one and all in the state to stand as one against narcotic drugs, drug dealers/smugglers, poppy planters, and other supporters. A better and more effective policy would be taking up action against local smugglers/dealers in each locality, continued the group in their press release.
They also spoke of their lamentations over the massive effects of narcotic drugs among various categories of individuals, students, youths, married ones, parents, and others making one lose their loved ones, friends, brothers, sisters, and who else not. The influence of drugs has converted many a widow, widower, orphan, and childless.
The student organizations made the statements through a press release on Thursday.
