State's 19 Olympians felicitated; CM handed over Olympic park to Public
The Olympic Park at Sangaithel hillock, Imphal West district, is the first of its kind in the Northeast. It lodges statues of 19 state Olympians. The construction project is said to be accomplished within 9 months.
After union Home Minister Amit Shah formally inaugurated the Olympic park on 6th January- CM N. Biren Singh handed over the Olympic park to the people of Manipur on Friday in the august presence of state Olympians and his cabinet ministers and MLAs.
Manipur has produced a remarkable number of athletes who have participated in the Olympic Games. The first Olympian from Manipur Pangambam Nilakamal (1984 Olympics) also attended the grand opening of the Olympic park. He represented India as a goalkeeper of India's men's hockey team. He expressed his happiness to witness such an acknowledgment for the sports players in the state.
Manipur has produced 19 Olympians till now, who competed in 5 disciplines, namely, hockey, boxing, weightlifting, judo, and archery. Out of 28 total medals won by India in the Olympic Games so far, 3 medals are from Manipur.

Saikhom Mirabai Chanu in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics bagged a silver medal in the Women's weightlifting 49 kg category and Nilakanta Sharma in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics bagged a Bronze medal in Men's hockey.
The 19 olympian who was felicitated by CM N.Biren Singh in handing over the park are Pangambam Nilakamal Hockey, Kshetrimayum Thoiba Hockey, Ngangom Dingko Boxing, Soubam Suresh Boxing, Lourembam Brojeshori Judo, Thingbaijam Sanamacha Weightlifting, Nameirakpam Kunjarani Weightlifting, Khumujam Tombi Judo, Laishram Bombayla Archery, Khadangbam Kothajit Hockey, Mary Kom Boxing, Laishram Devendro Boxing, Ngangbam Sonia Weightlifting, Laishram Bombayla Archery, , Kangujam Chinglensana Hockey, Thokchom Anuradha Hockey, Pukhrambam Sushila Chanu Hockey, Saikhom Mirabai Chanu Weightlifting, and Likmabam Sushila Judo.
CM also tweeted, "Immensely happy to hand over the Manipur Olympian Park and felicitate the Olympians of the state at Sangaithel today.
Our sports persons and athletes from this small border state in North East India have not only represented the entire nation at various international arenas but also brought laurels for the country and placed Manipur at a lofty position.
Indeed, our sports players deserve the highest form of honor and recognition for their hard work, dedication, and their undying love for sports."
Later a grand feast was organized by CM N. Biren to serve together with the living sports legends of Manipur who have shone at various national and international sports events by giving many victorious and memorable performances.
CM N. Biren said the State Government is always ready to support the youths toward achieving the goal of their life.
The 10 Acres of land for the construction of the Olympic park were donated by an organization of Sangaithel which was acknowledged and felicitated by CM for their contribution.
Reportedly, Manipur is also setting up a training center at the park in consultation with Samsung, for which the necessary machines are expected to arrive by January 15.
The handing over of the Olympic park to the public was attended by MLA Thokchom Radheshyam, President State Olympic Association, Minister Govindas Khonthoujam, MLA S. Rajen Deputy Planning Commission of State, Minister Nemcha Kipgen, and other dignitaries.
