Manipur police on Thursday evening detained at least six supporters of indefinite economic blockade on two important National Highways called by the All-Manipur Tribal Development and Grievances Forum (AMTDGF).
Additional director general of police (ADGP) L Kailun, while confirming picking up of blockade supporters, said imposing economic blockade was anti-national and a violation of people’s rights.
Addressing media persons, L Kailun said that legal action will be initiated against the strike callers and supporters. He informed the police have made all the necessary security arrangements for the undisturbed flow of the vehicles, particularly goods trucks, during the blockade.
In the meantime, state transport minister Khasim Vashum has appealed to the AMTDGF to withdraw the economic blockade imposed on national highways and invited leaders of the forum for a talk with the government.
An indefinite economic blockade was called by the AMTDGF on the national highways from Thursday onwards to press the state government to release pending funds for MGNREGS. The group demanded immediate release of adequate funds under the MGNREGA scheme to all the 16 districts of the state.
In a joint statement, AMTDGF President Hesho Lorho and General Secretary Gangonglung Khumba said that the state government's "adamant stand" of not releasing sufficient funds to all the districts led to a serious economic crisis among the people living in the interior and tribal dominated areas of Manipur.
The forum urged people, truck and transport associations and civil society groups to cooperate with AMTDGF to make its agitation successful.
