The Coordination Committee (CorCom) observed National Black Day on Saturday to mark “India's forcible merger of Manipur (Kangleipak) on 15th October in 1949”. The CorCom has imposed state-wide shut down.
The normally bustling major markets in the Imphal city and other districts wore a deserted look. However, there were some private vehicles plying on the road.
Most of the markets and business establishments remained closed while government offices registered thin attendance. Schools and educational institutions in the city remained closed.
According to a CorCom statement, Manipur (Kangleipak) regained its sovereign status in the midnight of August 14, 1947 after remaining under the rule of British imperialist for 56 years. However, India swiftly and forcibly annexed Manipur on October 15, 1949 and the day is being observed as National Black Day every year and there is no let up for this year (2022) too, CorCom said, adding that the general strike will be effective from midnight of October 14 to 5pm of October 15”.
According to CorCom, India continues to impose a unique economy (colonial economy) in Manipur (Kangleipak) and it is yet to take up steps for self-sustenance economy. One unique identity of this type of economy is to expand captive market wherein India will collect raw materials from the occupied region and sell their products only.
The CorCom statement further said that India utilises various tactics to torture and suppress people of Manipur (Kangleipak) right from the period of Part-C state till date with the imposition of various draconian legislations including the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA).
“The present issues confronting the Manipur (Kangleipak) like unemployment, drug menace and corruption are result of these compelling situations brought about by India's suppressive regime”, the statement said.
