Saikhom Mirabai Chanu has claimed India’s first gold medal in the women’s 49-kilogram event at Birmingham. Chanu lifted a total of 201 kilogram in snatch and clean and jerk category.
The Tokyo 2020 Olympics silver medallist competing in the Women’s 49kg category, lifted a total of 201kgs including a personal best of 88kg in snatch, to win the contest.
Roilya Ranaivosoa of Mauritania won silver with a total lift of 172kgs while Canada’s Hannah Kaminski won bronze with a total of 171kgs to her name. Mirabai’s overall lift of 201kgs is a new CWG record while her snatch effort was also a CWG as well as a Commonwealth record.
Bindyarani Devi Sorokhaibam won a silver medal with a combined lift of 202kg in the Women's 55kg final at the ongoing Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham on July 30.
"I'm very happy to get a silver in the first time of playing CWG. Today was my life's best performance. Gold slipped out of my hand. When I was at podium, I wasn't at the centre. I will do better next time," Bindyarani Devi told media persons.

Every Indian is delighted that she has won a Gold and set a new Commonwealth record at the Birmingham Games and her success inspires several Indians, especially budding athletes, he added.
