Annoyed with the dead silence of the Prime Minister and others at the Centre, a large number of women under the banner of Manipur Women Convention demanded the union government to review the Merger Agreement signed between Manipur, a Sovereign State then with India in 1949.

Mothers of Khwairamband Ima Keithel along with the mothers from all corners of Imphal valley said the statement above during a sit-in-protest on Tuesday at Ima Keithel No. 1, Imphal Manipur, against the demand of the Kukis to remove state forces from Moreh, a town in Chandel district of Manipur and deploy central forces there a few days back.

Speaking on the occasion, Asem Nirmala, a representative of Manipur Women Convention, said that the authority must not consider the demands of the Kukis to remove the state forces from Moreh and deploy central forces instead. In case, the government at the centre or the state deploys central forces, it would prove a stepping stone for the creation of separate administration. Manipur is a small state and there is no such rule in the constitution to have two separate administrations in a small state like Manipur. Even if the Kukis think it right and constitutional to demand separate administration, they can do it on the table. Why do they terror against the Meiteis, kill so many innocent lives, arson many Meitei villages and their houses, etc., added the lady.

She furthered that the conflict is completing three months, yet the Prime Minister has not said a word on Manipur. At this sheer irresponsiveness, the mothers unanimously decided not to request any further to the central government. The centre, she said, has been paying no heed to the demands, requests and what not to look into the ongoing conflict in the state. So, they decided they would rather demand to review the Merger agreement. And they will fight for it till a drop of blood runs in their vien. The mothers also said they would dig into the criteria on which the Merger agreement was signed in 1949.

The Meteis are also deprived of the basic criteria like security, freedom of speech and communication enshrined in the merger agreement. There is, in fact, no democracy under the BJP government in both the state and the union government, added the representative.

Later on, the mothers shouted slogans including “Enforcement state forces at Moreh and other Kuki inhabited areas”, “Stop Using Indian Security Forces Against the Meiteis”, “Remove Assam Rifles from Manipur”, etc.
