Mass Meitei Exodus from Mizoram: Sixty-eight Meitei individuals Flew Back in Imphal
Sixty-eight Meitei individuals from Mizoram flew back home to Imphal on Sunday afternoon around 1.30 O’clock after PAMRA and other CSOs including Hmar Students’ Association threatened the Meiteis in Mizoram to leave the state immediately and return to Manipur for safety on Friday.
Sanjoy Singh (Name Changed), an associate professor under Mizoram Government said that the Meiteis have been receiving verbal warnings to leave Mizoram from 3rd May itself when the conflict broke out in Manipur. And the mass exodus began on Saturday when warning in writing surfaced from various organizations. However, the government didn’t promise any form of security except for a few security personnel.
As promised by Manipur’s government, the Meiteis were supposed to be airlifted on Sunday, but it was cancelled later on. And as a result, many Meiteis stay behind because they didn’t book their air tickets as they thought they would be airlifted by the Manipur government.
It is reported that around 500 plus Meiteis have reached Imphal so far since the threat message circulated on May 3rd, 2023.
According to sources, many families took risks and drove to neighbouring Cachar, Assam for safety. While many others stay behind.
A report also came that the landlords in Aizawl have started expelling Meitei Tenants from their respective rents. Besides, the MARA Women’s Wing closed down one and only Meitei-owned Store “The Meitei Dresses” located in Siaha District, Mizoram after a viral video surfaced a day before the Parliament's Monsoon session. Further, the women's wing also erased the nametag of the Meitei shop ahead of a Mass Protest Rally in Mizoram on 24th July 2023to be organized by Mara Chano Py, Mizo Hmeichhe Insuihkhawm Pawl, and Lai Women Association.
While a day before, All Manipur United Clubs Organization (AMUCO) in collaboration with Porei Leimarol Meira Paibee Apunba Manipur and All Manipur Women’s Voluntary Association pleaded Mizoram government to not indulge in the present and abd avoid further escalation of the conflict. The organizations also appealed to take necessary security measures to save the Meiteis in Mizoram from any unwanted happenings.
