One accused arrested in connection to brutal acts on two women

Manipur Police on Thursday arrested one accused, Huirem Herodas Singh (32 years), son of (L) H. Rajen Singh of Pechi Awang Lekai, in connection to brutal acts on two women. The state Police on Wednesday registered a case at Nongpok Sekmai Police Station, Thoubal District with regard to the viral video of two women paraded naked by unknown armed miscreants on 4th May, 2023, a case of abduction, gangrape and murder etc.

Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh said a thorough investigation is underway and strict action will be taken against all perpetrators including the possibility of capital punishment. Taking to Twitter, the Chief Minister said “my hearts go out to the two women who were subjected to a deeply disrespectful and inhumane act, as shown in the distressing video that surfaced yesterday. After taking a Suo-moto cognisance of the incident immediately after the video surfaced, the Manipur Police swung to action and made the first arrest this morning”.

“A thorough investigation is currently underway and we will ensure strict action is taken against all the perpetrators, including considering the possibility of capital punishment. Let it be known, there is absolutely no place for such heinous acts in our society, the Chief Minister said.

In the meantime, the Centre has asked Twitter and other social media platforms to pull down the video of the two Manipur women paraded naked as the matter is under investigation. The social media platforms operating in India should abide by the Indian laws and the matter is under investigation, the government is believed to have communicated to the social media platforms after the video went viral shaking the collective consciousness of the country.
