Silchar Truck Driver Association (STDA) has banned public carriage vehicles from entering Manipur following the physical assault on one of the truck drivers registered under All Jiribam Road Transport Union (AJRTU) by Kamai Police for refusing to give an ‘Entry fee’ at the station.

Over 100 vehicles are presently stranded at Cachar Lalpani following the imposition of the ban, a source said.

Speaking to media, AJRTU President L. Maniton Singh said that the unfortunate incident took place at Kaimai police station, on Sunday around 1.30 pm when a driver called Joynal Hussain, s/o Late Abdul Haq of Lalpani, Assam, was heading towards Jiribam from Imphal.

As per the President, the police demanded an entry fee of Rs. 300 from Joynal, the driver. However, the driver offered only Rs 20 saying that the truck was empty. At this, Joypal was told to stop at Kaimai police and pay an entry fee of Rs 300. The driver refused to concede the unreasonable fee. However, he paid Rs. 20 after the police reduced the fee to Rs 50.
No drivers have ever made any entry at the Kaimai police station so far, Maniton reported.

The President furthered that Joynal Hussain was beaten severely by the police, and he would require heavy medical expenses to treat the injuries. At this, the President urged the State Government to look into the matter.

Expressing strong condemnation over the brutality of the policeman on the driver, RH Lashkar, Vice president of STDA, has sought the Government to take stringent action against the police personnel involved. He also appealed to the concerned authorities to extend financial assistance to the injured driver.

Lashkar also said that the association will ban any vehicle from entering Manipur until and unless an agreement is reached between the police station and the association regarding the incident.
