Scores of women got injured when combined teams of central forces, particularly the Rapid Action Forces, fired heavy Tear gas shells upon the agitating women at Phougakchao Ikhai Mayai Leikai on Thursday. The injured ones are admitted at Moirang Public Health Centre and Bishnupur District Hospital.

Following the announcement of the Indigenous Tribal Leaders Forum (ITLF) to bury the deceased members of the Kuki-Zo community at the Sericulture farm at Torbung Bangla of Bishnupur District near Haolai Khopi of Churachandpur district on Thursday, the 3rd August, hundreds of women rushed toward Torbung Bangla side. However, they were stopped at Phougakchao Ikhai Mayai Leikai by the combined central forces consisting of the Jat Regiments, Kumaon Regiment, Gurkha Regiment, CRPF, and the infamous Assam rifles. The combined team parked their heavy-armoured vehicles and  blocked the road to stop the women from marching forward.

As per the women, they simply wanted to visit their own houses at Torbung Bangla and protect their ancestral land from being occupied and used by the Kukis as their burial ground.

Co-ordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI) objected the attempt to bury Kukis at Torbung on August 3 and asserted that the same is a provocation of further violence in the conflict-torn state.

On Wednesday, COCOMI and other CSOs warned that the deceased Chin-Kuki narco-terrorists cannot be buried at the Sericulture Firm in Torbung Bangla in the Bishnupur district beyond the Churachandpur district boundary.

On Thursday, the High Court of Manipur has directed the Central and the state governments, the law enforcing agencies and the public belonging to both the communities to maintain status quo ante of the land in question until next hearing. The direction came after the International Meeteis Forum filed a P.I.L at Manipur High Court against State of Manipur and others.

On the other hand, the Indigenous Tribal Leader Forum (ITLF) said the proposed mass burial of 35 Kuki-Zo bodies at Torbung, Bishnupur district has been deferred for five days. However, ITLF said the ceremony plan at the peace ground opposite the mini secretariat in Churachandpur will happen as per plan.

The Indigenous Tribal Leader Forum (ITLF) expressed that the MHA requested us to delay the burial for 5 more days and that if they comply with that request they will be allowed to bury in the same location and the government will legalize the land for the burial. Accordingly, they changed their previous plan and postponed the burial ceremony for five days.

As per reports, the ITLF has proposed the following demands to the Home Ministry,

1) The legalization of the burial site in S. Boljang of Churachandpur, Manipur (Dag No. 2022, 2025, 2161 and 2162 of 98-Torbung Lourup of Churachandpur district).

2) All Meitei state forces should not be deployed in all hill districts for the safety of the Kuki-Zo communities.

3) As the burial will be delayed, the dead bodies of the Kuki-Zo communities that are lying in Imphal should be brought to Lamka (Churachandpur).

4) Our political demand - total separation from Manipur should be accelerated.

5) The tribal jail inmates in Imphal should be transferred to other states for their safety".
