Alleged Kuki militants shot a XII standard student down on Thursday morning at Phaojakhai side.

The unfortunate incident occurred when the deceased tried to evade the firing site on Thursday morning at Phougakchao Ikhai, Bishnupur.

The deceased has been identified as Mayengbam Ricky, s/o M Ibomcha Meetei of Kwatha Turel Mapal Ward no. 9. He died due to bullet injury.

At around 10:43 pm on Thursday, police personnel deployed at Phaojaikhai Awang Leikai heard the sound of some people coming from Phaosenphai side. The personnel informed the 9th Assam Rifles about the incident, however, the Assam Rifles gave assurance that they will take responsibility and will not let anyone come down there and therein, requested the police personnel not to engage with alleged Kuki militants. Thus, after such assurance, the police personnel refrained from firing.

Further, around midnight, information came that more than 200 heavily armed alleged Kuki militants from Khangvai area might attack Awang Leikai from Phaosenphai side. Acting upon it, the BPR police teams as well as the CAPF were alerted.

Subsequently, around 1:55 am, pompibomb, mortar shells, etc. were fired from the Kuki side for around five minutes and started heavy firing. There was an exchange of fire on both sides afterward. And reinforcement CDO BPR teams were stopped by the QRT Army column stationed at Kwakta bazaar. The Army told the CDO team that the ambush has been laid opposite to sericulture office and two people are lying with bullet injuries.

However, the CDO team went ahead against their stoppage and reached Phaojaikhai Awang Leikai as reinforcement.

The exchange of firing continued till 5:00 am on Friday.
