8 CIVILIANS WOUNDED, 15 HOUSES RUINED IN DEMARCATION DISPUTE

THOUBAL 12 November - Yesterday at around 9:30 am an untoward incident occurred at Lilong Chingkham Ching in which 8 civilians were injured and 15 houses ruined in a clash between police and the locals. The alleged incident occurred when a revenue staff team led by SDO Lilong A Shijalembi along with a team of Thoubal District Police tried to demarcate a disputed land for building a police outpost at the foothill of Lilong Chingkham Ching forcibly. The locals try to stop and request the team to stop demarcation but the team didn't adhere to their plea and began demarcating the land-they begin to spike peg around the foothill. At the insolent behavior of the team number of locals roused and began agitating- even pelted stone at the police ruining a house on Kabui Ching. A police team led by SP Thoubal, Addl. SP Thoubal and CDO of Imphal West, East, Kakching, and Bishnupur District tried to control and convene the local. But the situation got worsened to control the crowd the team fire rounds of rubber bullets and launches many tear gas and smoke bomb. On the incident 8 more were injured among which 2 are in critical condition and are being hospitalized. Abdul Gani family member of the injured says that he even requested the police not to launch smoke bombs and tear gas on the house owing to the condition of his bedridden mother but the police didn't stop and a smoke bomb fell before the bed of his bedridden mother. Later she was shifted to a safer pucca house. Gani condemns the terrifying action of the police. Speaking on the incident Md. Aslam Khan, Secretary Lilong Chingkham Maya Development Organization says that forcible demarcation of the disputed land by the authority and the actions of the police are very unfortunate and condemning. The Government must take the risk of injuring people and ruining houses. And he charges the team for instigating communal hatred between the two inhabiting communities. The locals seek the timely intervention of the government on this matter. On the other hand, M Gairanlung join Secretary Chingkham Thoubei (pei) said that according to Cheitharol Kumbaba the said land has been inhabited by their ancestor for more than 300 years. But the Lilong Chingkham Development Organization filed a case in 2012 citing their land as Khas land and all their Pattas to be fake. The court also favors their claim. After that, they filed a writ petition to the High Court. He further added that they have been oppressed for more than 10 years and they fear to live in such a situation thereby asking for protection due to the alleged incident.
