The Supreme Court on Monday granted the Centre three months to complete the delimitation exercise in Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, and Manipur. A bench led by Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna considered Solicitor General Tushar Mehta’s request for more time and deferred the hearing to July 21.
The court had earlier questioned the delay, citing a 2020 presidential order that lifted the deferment. While the Centre cited ongoing consultations for Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland, it said the violence in Manipur had hindered the process.
The petitioners argued that the delay violated Article 14 (right to equality), as Assam had already completed delimitation in August 2023. The Election Commission maintained that it required specific directions from the Centre to proceed.
