The Forest Department of Manipur celebrated International Day of Forests 2025 at the Imperial Hall, Classic Grande, Chingmeirong, Imphal, under the theme "Celebrating Forests and Foods." The event aimed to raise awareness about the crucial role forests play in sustaining ecosystems, ensuring food security, and promoting environmental conservation.
The celebration saw the presence of key dignitaries, including Anurag Bajpai, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests & HoFF, Arun Kumar Sinha, Principal Secretary (Forest, Environment & Climate Change), and Soreiphy Vashum, Additional Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (Administration & Planning).
The event began with the ceremonial watering of the Heirengoi plant, symbolizing the department’s commitment to forest conservation and sustainability. R.K. Amarjit Singh, Conservator of Forests Central Circle and Special Secretary (Forests, Environment & Climate Change), delivered the welcome address, stressing the importance of community participation and the role of Joint Forest Management Committees (JFMCs) in preserving forest ecosystems.
An exhibition was also held, featuring forest-based products from various districts of Manipur. Van Dhan Vikas Kendra (VDVK) members showcased their products, highlighting the economic benefits of sustainable forest resource utilization.
Delivering the keynote address, Anurag Bajpai emphasized the critical role forests play in maintaining biodiversity and supporting food security. He highlighted the abundant natural resources provided by forests and the responsibility of citizens to engage in conservation efforts. Following this, Arun Kumar Sinha addressed the audience on challenges such as climate change and rising temperatures. He also underscored the market potential of VDVK products and strategies to leverage these opportunities.
A short film on Van Dhan Vikas Kendras (VDVKs) was screened, showcasing how forest-based food products are improving the economic conditions of local communities through sustainable harvesting and processing.
The event also featured two technical sessions:
- "Food Security through Forests" by Romabai Waikhom, DFO, Bishnupur
- "Employment Opportunities in Forests" by Debala Leiphrakpam, CF/Eastern Circle, Chairman FDA (Kamjong/Tengnoupal/Chandel)
The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Vikram Suresh Nadhe, IFS DFO/Central Forest Division, who expressed gratitude to all participants for their active involvement.
The International Day of Forests 2025 celebration successfully underscored the importance of forests in sustaining life, enhancing food security, and generating livelihoods. The Manipur Forest Department reaffirmed its commitment to sustainable forest management, ensuring a balance between environmental conservation and community welfare.
