The Taragi Cheisu, a prominent conglomerate of elders and professionals, has expressed deep concern over the ongoing violence in Manipur. In a letter addressed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the group highlighted the severe impact of the violence that has plagued the state since May 3, 2023, affecting the peaceful coexistence of its residents.

The letter criticizes the government’s response to the conflict between the Kuki and Meetei communities, noting the absence of effective measures over the past thirteen months. The Taragi Cheisu condemned the silence of the Prime Minister's office and pointed out the failure of both Union and state law enforcement agencies, despite the deployment of nearly 80,000 security personnel.

The group emphasized that the central forces, intended to curb the violence, have been perceived as indifferent. Instead of restoring peace, they have facilitated evacuations, which the Taragi Cheisu claims has led to ethnic cleansing. The recent forced relocations of the Meetei community from regions such as Churachandpur, Moreh, and Jiribam’s Borobekra sub-division, were cited as examples of this troubling trend.

The Taragi Cheisu’s plea underscores the urgent need for decisive action to restore peace and rebuild trust among the people of Manipur.
