Manipur Special Judge Sentences Drug Dealer to Rigorous Imprisonment

Special Judge ND&PS Manipur Monalisa Maibam today sentenced 65-year-old drug dealer Khupal Khongsai to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs 1 lakh under section 21 (C) of the ND&PS Act. In case of default on the fine payment within six months, Khongsai will have to serve an additional year of simple imprisonment.

Khongsai, a resident of Molnom village, Litan, was convicted on June 1 for possessing 3.045 kilograms of brown sugar. The sentence hearing was conducted virtually, with the court considering submissions from both the Special Public Prosecutor and the defense counsel.

The case originated from Khongsai's arrest on October 20, 2022, by the Narcotic and Affairs of Border Manipur during a routine check at Kanglatongbi along the Imphal-Dimapur highway. Khongsai was apprehended while traveling from Senapati to Imphal in a Tata Xenon pick-up truck.
