Condemning the harsh treatment of Wangkhemcha Shyamjai, the President of the Union, by the NIA on 2nd August 2022, the AMJU, Editors Guide Manipur, and the Manipur Hill Journalist Union staged on Thursday, the 4th August, a sit-in protest at Keishampat Leimajam Leikai Community Hall. They also went on strike to mark their protest against the harassment of the President.
Githatha Pathak, President of the Indian Journalists Union, in the protest said that the NIA sent a summon on 2nd August following the arrest of two journalists for links with an insurgent group. The NIA told him to arrive at the latter's office at 10 am. He went there in time. Unfortunately, he was confined all alone to a small and narrow room till noon. An officer came and interrogated him till evening irrelevantly about the links of the two arrested with the insurgent.
The AMJU, EGM, and MHJU organized an emergency meeting yesterday condemning the ill-treatment of Wangkhemcha Shyamjai and submitted a memorandum to the Governor, Chief Minister, and the President of BJP Manipur Pradesh.
"NIA's ill-treatment of the President is condemnatory and is a violation of the Freedom of Press," said Pathak, the President of IJU. He also said that the union would raise the issue internationally and move international Unions to set up laws to preserve the freedom of the press.
All Bishnupur District Working Journalists' Union also demonstrated a sit-in-protest against the harassment of AMJU's President by the NIA at the Temporary Market at Bishnupur Bazar.
H. Romen, the Vice President of ABDWJU, said that the harassment of AMJU's President isn't the first of its kind. There had been many cases earlier also. At this, he appealed to the government to ensure freedom of the press to media persons and houses. He also said that unless the media-the fourth pillar of democracy, is given freedom, they will never work efficiently.
