Manipur Loumi Lup has appealed to the Agriculture Department in the state to take early and special measures to ensure a good harvest for the year 2023-2024.
As Imphal East, Imphal West, Thoubal, and Bishnupur suffer from water scarcity frequently owing to the lack of a Water Management program in the districts, said the Secretary. Further, he continued, for the last four years, the production fell sharply due to excess rain at the time of transplantation of rice seeding and drought-like situations during the time of harvesting.
Since it would be impossible for agents to carry in the agricultural requirements through the National Highway owing to the present ethnic crisis between the Meiteis and the Kukis, the Organization has urged the ministers to feasibly arrange ways to transport the inputs required for the cultivation including urea, fertilizers, pesticides, insecticides, HYV seeds, etc. through Jiribam – Khongshang railway station, added the secretary in the press release.
Putting forward to ensure wide availability of HYV seeds, the Secretary furthered that as most of the productive fields lay next to hill areas where the armed Kuki Militants stay in large numbers, the state should ensure that the militants are either forced out or deploy personnel of Manipur Rifles, IRB, and Indo Tibetan Border Police Force instead of the infamous Assam Rifles and CRPF till a proper solution is worked out.
The Secretary also spoke of discontinuing fertilizer distribution and other inputs through local MLAs or Ministers and appointing an agricultural office for the same purpose this time.
